March came in swinging this year, and honestly, we can’t think of a better way to welcome it.
Leanne – now officially one of our favourite people – invited Hog Roast Cwmdu to cater her annual St David’s Day party, a tradition she hosts for her family every year. Usually, she’s the one tying on the apron and running the kitchen like a pro but after an accident left her navigating life in a leg cast, she decided (very sensibly) that this year she’d supervise from a comfy chair instead. We fully supported that decision.
When Leanne told us her only non-negotiable was lamb for the main course, we tried not to look too excited. A little creative freedom? Don’t mind if we do.
We went all in with a whole roasted lamb, slow-cooked until tender and studded generously with rosemary and garlic. The smell alone was enough to draw curious relatives into the garden before we’d even finished carving. On the side, we served mint sauce and towering Yorkshire puddings – because if you’re going to do it, you may as well do it properly.
To round things out, we added buttery market vegetables, lightly seasoned and steamed to keep their colour and crunch, alongside rich, creamy dauphinoise potatoes. Comfort food, but elevated. The kind of spread that makes people go quiet for a few minutes while they concentrate on their plates.
Hog Roast Cwmdu didn’t forget about the non-meat eaters either – not that we ever do. Grilled vegetable and halloumi kebabs made their way onto the menu, served with warm flatbreads, cool tzatziki and a drizzle of sweet chilli sauce. No afterthought options here – everyone had something worth getting excited about.
And then, because no family celebration is complete without dessert, Hog Roast Cwmdu brought out sticky toffee pudding (handmade, obviously) and individual cheesecakes topped with fresh fruit. Add a scoop of ice cream and let the compliments roll in.
It might not have been the most traditional St David’s Day feast, but judging by the empty plates and very contented smiles, we’d say it went down a treat. Most importantly, Leanne got to relax, leg up, surrounded by family – exactly as it should be
